Chapter 106
The Patient Who Said No
The opening led to a hospital ward that had never existed.
Rows of beds stood beneath fluorescent lights. Patients lay beneath white sheets. Each bed carried a name and one word: yes, no, unclear.
Elise occupied the last bed.
Her word was no.
“She was kept here because she refused transfer,” Claire said.
Mara nodded. “The program treated refusal as a symptom.”
Daniel walked to Elise's bed.
The woman beneath the sheet opened her eyes.
“You came back,” she said.
“I never left.”
“Your body did.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Rowan climbed onto the bed beside her mother.
Elise touched her hair.
“I remember your hands.”
“I remember your voice.”
“They told you I forgot you.”
“They told me you were a model.”
Elise looked at Daniel. “You wanted a reason not to fight.”
The ward lights flickered.
Everett Bell appeared at the far end of the hall.
“The patient refused care,” he said.
Elise answered, “I refused ownership.”
The beds began to move. Every patient who had marked no sat upright.
Their voices joined.
“No is a complete record.”
Everett backed away.
Claire took the blue pencil and wrote the word NO across the ward wall.
The hospital doors opened.
The patients stood.
Only Elise remained in the bed.
“I cannot leave yet,” she said.
“Why?” Rowan asked.
“Someone has to close the room.”
The ceiling collapsed between them.
