The Woman in Cabin 12

Ch. 115 - Room Ten

Chapter 115

Room Ten

Room Ten was the house before the house.

Claire landed on a kitchen floor she remembered from photographs. The cabinets were yellow. The refrigerator hummed. A crib stood beside the window.

Her mother held a newborn.

Lena was not yet born.

Mara stood in the doorway, younger than Claire had ever seen her.

“This is before me,” Claire said.

“Before the family learned the rules,” Mara answered.

The mother looked toward the camera.

“If one child remembers, the family survives.”

The newborn cried.

Claire stepped closer. “Who is the baby?”

Her mother answered, “You.”

The room shifted.

Mara held a second infant in the doorway.

“And Lena?”

“Lena was born after the first choice.”

The two infants began crying together.

Their mother placed one in the crib and held the other against her chest.

“The clinic asked which child would be the witness,” Mara said.

Claire turned to her. “Before Lena was born?”

“The family had already signed.”

The mother chose Claire.

The crib light went dark.

Lena's unborn voice came through the walls.

“You survived because they needed someone who could remember me.”

Claire felt the floor vanish.

The first selection was not a medical procedure.

It was a family meeting.

Claire's mother sat at the table with a clinic representative. Mara stood behind her, watching the newborn in the crib.

“The older child has a stronger response,” the representative said.

“She is three days old,” Claire's mother answered.

“She is responsive.”

“They are both responsive.”

The representative placed two forms on the table.

One carried Claire's name. The other carried an empty line.

“The first witness must have a name,” he said.

“The second?”

“The second can be protected.”

Mara stepped forward. “Protected from what?”

The representative smiled. “From responsibility.”

Claire's mother signed the first form.

The name Claire appeared in the witness column.

The empty line remained beside it.

Mara took the pen.

“Write Lena,” she said.

“She has not been born.”

“Then write the person she will become.”

The representative took the pen away.

“Names are not predictions.”

Mara looked at the crib.

“They are when people obey them.”

The room ended.

Claire stood in a hallway of blank forms. Each page asked the same question: WHO GETS TO BE PROTECTED?

She wrote NO ONE CHILD.

The forms folded themselves into birds.

One bird flew toward a locked bedroom.

The locked bedroom was empty except for a crib.

Lena's voice came from the mattress.

“They wanted you to remember me before I existed.”

Claire opened the crib drawer.

Inside was a red ribbon, a prescription bottle, and a photograph of Mara holding Claire as a baby.

On the back, Mara had written a promise.

I will not let them make you responsible for the next child.

“You failed,” Claire said.

Mara appeared in the doorway.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother asked me to protect Lena by making you strong.”

“Strong means responsible?”

“That was the lie.”

The bedroom filled with the sound of a baby crying.

The cry became Lena's adult voice.

“You protected me so well that I could not be a person without being your emergency.”

Claire placed the ribbon beside the bottle.

“What does the house want?”

“It wants you to choose which version of the family is true.”

“I refuse.”

The crib vanished.

The floor opened onto a hospital corridor.

At its end, a child waited beside a door marked LENA'S FIRST MEMORY.
