Chapter 119
The Sentence That Broke the Room
The sentence spread through Room Ten.
It is not all right.
The kitchen walls cracked. The forms burned. The crib collapsed into paper. Claire's mother appeared at the far end of the room, older now, wearing the expression Claire remembered from the hospital.
“You were supposed to help me,” she said.
“I was your child.”
“You were the capable one.”
“That was not consent.”
Mara stood beside Claire.
“She is right.”
The mother looked at Mara. “You promised to protect her.”
“I promised to keep the family together.”
“It is the same thing.”
“No,” Claire said. “It is the sentence that broke the room.”
The house fell away.
All that remained was the kitchen table and three chairs.
Claire sat in one. Mara sat in another. The mother's model sat in the third.
The room asked its last question.
WHO WAS THE FIRST WITNESS?
Claire looked at Mara.
Mara looked at the mother.
The mother's model looked at the empty doorway.
Lena entered.
“No one,” she said.
The room accepted the answer.
Room Ten disappeared.
Claire woke in the hospital basement beside Aster and Rowan.
On the wall, Room Eleven opened beneath the old family court.
