The Form with No Parent

“The system will reject you,” Claire said.

“Then the system will learn.”

She wrote her own name in the final line.

ASTER — PERSON.

The form folded into a paper star.

The children repeated the action. Each added a name, a desire, or a refusal. The hospital hallway filled with paper stars.

Everett Bell dropped the file.

“You think names will save you.”

“Names will not save us,” Aster answered. “People will stop using them as cages.”

The last star flew toward the ceiling.

Room Twelve opened above the hospital.

Claire saw a dark room filled with empty beds.

Mara looked at it and went still.

“That is where they stored the failed witnesses.”

“How many?” Claire asked.

“Enough that no one remembers the count.”

The children gathered behind her.

Claire picked up the dropped file.

The first witness order had changed.

The signature line no longer carried her mother's name.

It carried Claire's.

The record had rewritten the past.

The room above them opened its doors.

Someone inside began to clap.
