The Patient Without a Chart
The patient without a chart was a woman Claire recognized.
She had seen her in the control room beneath Bellwether: a nurse who carried a stack of folders and claimed not to hear the knock.
“You were there,” Claire said.
“I was always there.”
“What is your name?”
The woman looked at the empty bed.
“They used to call me Maren.”
“And now?”
“Now I am trying to remember whether I chose it.”
Aster offered her the blue pencil.
“Choose again.”
Maren took it.
The roof became the first clinic room. Maren was young, standing beside a treatment chair. Mara asked her to turn off the machine.
Maren reached for the switch.
Everett stopped her.
“If you turn it off, the patient becomes responsible.”
Maren said, “The patient is already responsible for saying no.”
The memory ended.
Maren wrote her name on the chart.
MAREN — I TURNED IT OFF.
The system marked her stable.
She began to cry.
“I have waited fourteen years to write that sentence.”
Claire put an arm around her.
The roof doors slammed.
The hospital announced a mass discharge.
Every patient in Room Twelve was now listed as released.
Below, the city alarms began to ring.
