Ch. 15 - The Archive Under the Courtroom

Chapter 15

The Archive Under the Courtroom

Daniel took them to the county courthouse instead of the station.

The building was closed for the night. Its front doors were chained, but Daniel had a key to the side entrance. Inside, the corridors smelled of old paper and floor wax. Tess kept looking behind them.

“Nobody followed us,” Daniel said.

“You do not know that,” Claire answered.

He led them downstairs to the records level. A steel cage occupied the center of the room. Inside were settlement files, sealed warrants, and boxes marked with dates going back thirty years.

Daniel opened a drawer and removed a thin folder.

The cover bore no name. Only a number: BWL-04-17.

Claire placed the prescription bottle beside it.

“This is the same code.”

“Yes.”

“You knew it was here.”

“I knew the code existed.”

“Why did you bring me?”

“Because the file cannot be opened without a witness.”

“A witness or a patient?”

Daniel ignored the question.

Inside the folder were photocopies of medical reports. The patient's name was redacted, but the handwriting in the margins belonged to Mara.

Response to grief trigger: immediate compliance.

Memory resistance: decreases when familiar voice is introduced.

Model stability: dependent on original subject proximity.

Tess read the notes over Claire's shoulder.

“Original subject?”

Daniel turned the page.

The next sheet showed a photograph of Claire asleep in the clinic room.

Her hair was longer than it was now. A wire ran beneath her jaw. Mara stood beside the bed with one hand on Claire's shoulder.

The photograph had been taken eleven months ago.

“You told me I was in Chicago,” Claire said.

Daniel's face tightened. “I did not know you were here.”

“You signed this settlement.”

“I signed after your sister died.”

“Then you knew.”

“I knew a patient had been brought in under a false name.”

“My name?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

Daniel did not answer.

The courthouse lights flickered.

Somewhere above them, a door closed.

Tess picked up the next page. “There is a birth certificate.”

The document listed a child born at Bellwether Clinic twelve years earlier. The mother's name was redacted. The father's name was Daniel Vale.

Daniel reached for the paper.

Tess held it away.

“You said your daughter was never born.”

“That certificate is false.”

“Your name is on it.”

“My name was used.”

“By whom?”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Mara.”

The answer entered Claire like cold water.

Mara had spent years telling Daniel she was protecting someone. Claire had assumed the someone was Claire.

The archive room door clicked.

No one stood in the corridor.

Daniel closed the folder. “We are leaving.”

“Not without the file.”

“It is sealed.”

Claire picked up the photograph. “So am I.”

The lights went out.

Tess gasped.

A small blue glow appeared inside the cage. The black key in Claire's hand had activated a hidden reader. A screen lit beneath the files and displayed a single instruction.

PLACE ORIGINAL SUBJECT'S HAND ON GLASS.

Daniel said, “Do not.”

Claire set her palm against the screen.

The machine accepted her fingerprint.

Every locked drawer in the archive opened at once.

Boxes slid forward like teeth.

From the ceiling speaker came a woman's voice.

“Thank you for returning.”

The voice was Claire's.
