Wren's mother's name was not in the archive.
It was in a hospital billing system, attached to a transfer fee.
Claire followed the record through three clinics and a private school. Each place had used the same phrase: family memory unverified.
Wren held Aster's hand.
“She was not a patient,” Wren said. “She was my mother.”
“Both can be true,” Aster answered.
The final file showed a death certificate with no body number.
Claire recognized the pattern.
“She entered the Mercy.”
The record displayed a passenger list.
Wren's mother was listed beside Lena.
Room Twenty-Four opened onto the lake.
The water carried a white research vessel toward them.
The Mercy had returned.

The woman looked at Claire. “Do not make me public.”
Claire answered, “I will not.”
“Do not make me private either.”
“What do you want?”
“To be asked again tomorrow.”
The new archive created a temporary record.
CONSENT PENDING — PERSON PRESENT.
The Mercy began to dissolve around them.
Wren's mother reached for her daughter.
“I remember your first word.”
“What was it?”
“No.”
The ship vanished.
