The Pending Room
Room Twenty-Five was designed for hesitation.
No one entered without a deadline. No file expired. No status changed because someone else waited.
Mara sat inside with her private file.
“This is cruel,” she said.
“Why?” Claire asked.
“Because I have to decide without being forced.”
“That is freedom.”
“It is also responsibility.”
Mara opened the file.
She released the clinic crimes, the financial records, and the names of the people who consented to public disclosure.
She kept the letter she wrote to Claire before the accident.
“Why keep that?”
“Because it belongs to us.”
Claire accepted the answer.
The room changed Mara's status from pending to self-selected.
For the first time, Mara's model stopped looking like the night of the accident.
She looked older.
That was enough.
Room Twenty-Six opened in the old clinic's financial office.
