The Boy and the Owner

Claire placed Samuel's name between them.

“The first record is not a crime,” Mara said. “The refusal to correct it became one.”

Everett's model rejected the sentence.

“You cannot judge survival.”

“We are judging ownership,” Claire answered.

The boy placed his hand on the glass.

The owner placed his over it.

For a moment, they became one person.

Then the boy withdrew.

“I do not want to be you.”

The owner disappeared.

The first clinic room went dark.
