The Woman in Cabin 12

Ch. 17 - The Child Who Remembered Her

Chapter 17

The Child Who Remembered Her

The archive door opened onto a corridor Claire had never seen.

It led upward, not toward the courthouse lobby, but toward the old county records room beneath the east wing. A strip of blue tape marked the floor every twelve feet. On each strip, someone had written a date.

Daniel carried the box containing Rowan's passport. Tess carried the recording device. Claire carried Mara's letters against her chest.

“We need to find Rowan,” Daniel said.

“You mean the girl in the passport,” Tess answered.

“She is not a girl anymore.”

“You do not know that.”

He stopped at the first blue mark. The date was fourteen years earlier.

“I know what happened to my daughter.”

Claire looked at him. “You just learned she existed.”

“I learned the file existed.”

“You are still protecting the difference.”

Daniel turned away.

The corridor ended at a locked office. A nameplate had been removed, leaving four pale screw holes in the wood. Daniel used his county key. The room contained a desk, a dead computer, and a wall covered with photographs.

Most showed children near the lake.

Some were smiling. Some looked directly at the camera. All had a small number written in the corner.

Claire found Rowan in the second row.

She was twelve years old in the photograph, wearing the same cream sweater as the woman in the corridor. Her face was younger, but the scar below her lip was already there.

Beside her stood Mara.

Mara's hand rested on Rowan's shoulder.

The caption read: Subject R-01 / stable attachment response.

Daniel touched the photograph.

“I never saw this.”

“You saw the settlement,” Claire said.

“I saw an empty file.”

“Someone removed the child.”

“Someone removed my life.”

On the desk, the dead computer turned on.

The screen showed a security feed from Cabin 12. Claire's house was no longer visible. Instead, it showed the courthouse corridor outside the office.

The woman with Claire's face stood in the frame.

She was not alone. Lucy Hart stood beside her, one hand on the woman's shoulder.

Lucy looked into the camera.

“You found the first room,” she said. “Now ask who was allowed to leave.”

The feed cut.

Tess moved to the desk. “There is a file drawer.”

Claire opened it. Inside were twelve sealed envelopes, each bearing a name. The first was Rowan Vale. The second was Lucy Hart. The third was Mara Rowan.

The fourth was Claire Rowan.

Her envelope was empty.

Only a small plastic card remained inside. It carried a photograph of Claire asleep in Cabin 12.

On the back, a sentence had been typed.

The subject remembers the room only when the replacement is nearby.
