Chapter 172
Room Thirty-Six
Room Thirty-Six was a bedroom with two beds.
One belonged to Claire. One belonged to Mara.
The girls sat on opposite beds, each holding a notebook.
Mara's notebook contained the clinic language. Claire's held ordinary memories: soup, snow, a broken lamp.
“You recorded the important things,” Claire said.
“You recorded the things that made them important.”
The two notebooks merged.
The archive asked which was true.
Claire answered, “Both.”
Mara answered, “Neither alone.”
The room accepted the answer.
Mara's private file unlocked.
