Mara's Letter
Mara's letter was addressed to Claire and no one else.
It did not explain the clinic. It did not apologize for every choice. It described the day Mara learned that Claire had stopped answering Lena's calls.
“I thought silence meant you were safe,” Mara wrote. “I was wrong. Silence meant you were alone.”
Claire read the letter twice.
Mara stood across the room, waiting.
“You can keep it private,” Claire said.
“I know.”
“You can release it.”
“I know.”
Claire folded the paper.
“I will share it with you.”
Mara nodded.
The letter became a shared record.
