Aster Leaves the Archive
Aster left the archive alone.
She rented a room in Detroit, opened a bank account, and chose work that had nothing to do with memory.
For three days, she did not visit the library.
On the fourth, Claire found her at a diner.
“Do you miss it?” Claire asked.
“I miss knowing what I am.”
“You are Aster.”
“That is a name.”
“It is a beginning.”
Aster looked out at the street.
“I want a life no one can use as evidence.”
Claire understood.
They ate breakfast without discussing the archive.
