Aster First Shift
Aster took the night shift because she said the archive should learn how ordinary people slept.
She brought a wool blanket, a paperback mystery, and a red plastic alarm clock that ticked too loudly. The archive rejected the clock three times. Aster brought it back four times.
By midnight, the shelves had stopped moving.
By one, the locked rooms began whispering.
By two, Aster had answered eleven questions written on the corridor glass. Most were practical. Where was the nearest exit? Who was authorized to remove a file? Could the kitchen keep its own records?
The twelfth question was different.
Who gets to forget?
Aster looked toward Claire, who was sitting at the far table, not intervening.
“The person who survived,” Aster said.
The archive went silent.
Then every door opened at once, except the door to Cabin Twelve.
