Chapter 225
Mara Leaves The Archive
Mara packed one suitcase.
She left the keys on the kitchen counter, beside the jar of salt she had carried from her first apartment.
“You’re really going?” Claire asked.
“I was always going,” Mara said. “I just confused staying with protecting everyone.”
The archive had made Mara useful by making her indispensable. Every door needed a keeper. Every secret needed someone willing to sleep beside it. But usefulness had become another kind of cage.
At the threshold, Mara turned back.
“If the building calls me?”
“You don’t have to answer.”
Mara smiled, almost embarrassed by the simplicity of it. Then she stepped outside.
The archive did not close. It did not collapse. It merely became quieter.
On the kitchen wall, a new brass plate appeared beneath the others.
MARA VALE — LEFT VOLUNTARILY.
Underneath, someone had scratched a date that had not happened yet.
