Cabin Twelve Shelter
They opened Cabin Twelve on a rainy Tuesday.
It had been a room designed for disappearance. They filled it with lamps, blankets, public telephones, and a table where anyone could leave without explaining why.
The first visitor was a teenager who stood in the doorway for twenty minutes.
“Do I have to sign in?” she asked.
“No,” Claire said.
“Do I have to tell you my name?”
“No.”
“Will you remember me?”
“Only if you ask us to.”
The girl stepped inside and chose the chair nearest the exit.
That night, Claire found a new line on the wall above the old bunk.
A room can be safe without becoming a secret.
