Chapter 231
Noras Map
Mara returned before dawn.
She did not ask how Claire had found the name. She saw the map and sat down as if her knees had forgotten their purpose.
“My mother drew this,” Mara said.
“You knew?”
“I knew she survived something. I didn’t know she built a place around it.”
The map showed tunnels under the old resort, each one ending at a room marked with a single letter. Cabin Twelve was not the first room. It was the last one.
Nora had built the door after a group of adults refused to believe what happened to the children trapped in the boathouse. She collected statements, hid names, and made a room where the unprotected could speak without being interrupted.
Then the people in power discovered the room.
They did not destroy it. They made it useful.
Mara traced the oldest line on the map.
“This tunnel leads beneath the lake.”
The paper began to bleed water.
