Chapter 237
The Room She Left
Claire entered alone.
She was seven years old again, sitting beneath a table while adults argued about whether the children had seen too much. Nora stood at the door, trying to keep them out. A man with Everett’s voice said the archive could make the problem disappear.
Young Claire held the red scarf in both hands.
“I want to go home,” she said.
Nora knelt beside her. “Then you will.”
But the door behind Nora closed. The archive chose safety over freedom and turned the promise into a system.
Claire watched herself forget.
When the memory ended, the room remained open.
She could leave it intact. She could seal it again. She could invite the others to witness it, but not claim it.
Claire placed the red scarf on the floor.
“I remember,” she said. “And I choose what happens next.”
The ceiling cracked open to daylight.
