The Door That Stayed Open
By evening, the lake had gone still.
The children were sleeping in the public shelter, guarded by volunteers who had signed no oath except the promise to ask before entering.
Nora sat by the window with Mara. They were not reconciled. They were speaking, which was more difficult and more honest.
Claire returned to Room Eighty. The table was bare except for one brass key.
“Is this the last room?” Rowan asked.
“No,” Claire said. “It’s the last room that belongs to the archive.”
She carried the key to Cabin Twelve. The door was open. Beyond it lay no corridor, no sleeping room, no lake beneath the lake.
Only a small ordinary cabin with two windows and a table.
Claire placed the key on the table.
Outside, the first morning birds began to call.
On the wall, a final sentence appeared.
The door stays open because no one is required to enter.
Claire reached for the handle.
