Chapter 30
Owen Bell's Court
Owen Bell entered the gym alone.
The security team remained outside. He wore a dark raincoat and carried no weapon. That was how Claire knew the room belonged to him. Men who owned a place did not need to arrive armed.
“You chose Mara,” he said.
“I wrote her name.”
“The system accepted it.”
“It accepts anything that helps it continue.”
Owen smiled. “That is a sophisticated interpretation from someone who has spent the last hour contradicting her own records.”
Daniel stepped forward. “Where is Rowan?”
“Which Rowan?”
“My daughter.”
“You have three daughters in the archive.”
“I have one.”
“That is what makes this difficult.”
Lucy moved toward Noah. Owen's guards blocked the doorway.
“The Harts were never missing,” Owen said. “They were participants.”
“You used a child,” Claire said.
“We protected a family from a woman who could not remain herself.”
“My sister?”
“Your sister believed identity was a burden that could be redistributed.”
The copy stood beside Claire. Her face was calm, but her hands had closed into fists.
Owen looked at her. “And you are proof she was right.”
“I am proof you needed her.”
His smile thinned.
“The program is not a prison. It is a court. Every model is given a chance to answer for the original.”
“Who decides the verdict?” Tess asked.
“The witness.”
“Then why are there twelve chairs?”
Owen looked toward the empty seats.
“Because one witness can be confused. Twelve witnesses create consensus.”
Claire understood. The program did not need truth. It needed enough identical testimony to make truth irrelevant.
The speaker announced, “Consensus threshold incomplete.”
Owen turned to the copy. “You were not supposed to bring the original.”
“She came back.”
“Then send her back.”
The copy looked at Claire. “Do you want to go?”
Claire heard the question beneath the question. Not do you want to leave the gym. Do you want to remain the person who entered it.
“No,” Claire said.
The system marked the answer resistant.
Owen's face lost its amusement.
“Open the archive,” he said.
The floor beneath the center chair unlocked.
A stairwell descended into darkness.
