Chapter 37
The Public Version
The police entered through the front doors.
They did not ask about the children first. They asked Claire to put down the pencil.
“You are Claire Rowan?” the officer said.
“Yes.”
“We have a report that you may be in danger.”
“From whom?”
“Yourself.”
The word landed exactly where Owen wanted it.
Daniel stepped forward. “This is a controlled site. You need to see the files.”
The officer looked at the camera above the hoop. “We have a warrant for an unauthorized medical facility.”
“Who requested it?”
“The county attorney.”
Claire looked at the gym wall. The children's names were still there, but the word alive had been painted over by a white chemical foam.
The records were disappearing in front of them.
“Everyone out,” the officer said.
Lucy moved toward the service door. Two officers blocked her.
“Lucy Hart is a missing person,” one said.
“She is not missing,” Noah answered.
“The record says otherwise.”
Claire took the blue pencil from her pocket.
The copy caught her hand. “Do not write on the wall.”
“Why?”
“They want you to.”
Claire looked at the officers, the camera, and the white foam swallowing the children’s names.
The system was not trying to erase the evidence. It was trying to make Claire react in a way that confirmed its story.
She placed the pencil on the floor.
“My name is Claire Rowan,” she said. “I am not consenting to medical evaluation.”
Daniel repeated the statement.
Tess repeated it.
Lucy repeated it.
Noah repeated it.
The children’s names remained beneath the foam.
The officer touched his radio. “The subjects are refusing care.”
Claire heard the phrase enter the public record.
Her phone buzzed.
A news notification appeared on a confiscated tablet.
LOCAL ARCHITECT ARRESTED AFTER BREAK-IN AT CLOSED SCHOOL.
The photograph showed Claire holding the blue pencil.
The caption said she had vandalized a public building during a psychotic episode.
The copy leaned toward her.
“Now you understand.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“Understand what?”
“Why the witness has to speak last.”
The officer reached for Claire's arm.
Before he touched her, the school intercom crackled.
Rowan Vale's voice said, “My name is Rowan Vale.”
Every person in the gym turned toward the empty wall.
