Chapter 39
The First Name
Owen Bell's first name was Everett.
He had changed it when he bought the resort. Claire knew this because Mara had written it in the margin of a financial report: Everett Bell refuses to answer to the name his mother used.
The copy said it aloud.
“Everett.”
The reporters turned toward him.
Owen's face became still.
“That name is irrelevant.”
“You used it in the first room,” the copy said. “You used it when you asked whether Rowan could remember the lake.”
Daniel reached the steps. “You knew her.”
“I knew a patient.”
“She is my daughter.”
“You have no proof.”
Claire held up the photograph from the archive. “We have the archive.”
Owen looked at the photograph.
For the first time, fear appeared.
Not fear of arrest. Fear that the wrong version of the story had become visible.
The police moved between him and the reporters. The county attorney arrived behind the barricade with two lawyers and a folder of emergency orders.
“No one speaks to the press,” she said.
Rowan's voice came through every reporter's phone at once.
“My name is Rowan Vale.”
Phones lifted into the air.
Owen turned toward the school.
“Shut it down.”
The lights inside the building went black.
The copy grabbed Claire's hand.
“The archive is moving.”
“Where?”
“To the courthouse.”
“Why?”
“Because the witness has spoken last.”
In the school gym, the foam dissolved from the wall.
Every child's name appeared again, darker than before.
At the bottom, a new name wrote itself in blue.
CLAIRE ROWAN — WITNESS.
Beneath it, another line appeared.
ROWAN VALE — ORIGINAL.
The reporters saw it.
The police saw it.
Owen Bell saw it.
Claire thought the public record had finally changed.
Then her phone displayed a new county alert.
ROWAN VALE — DECEASED.
The timestamp was one minute in the future.
