Chapter 53
The Woman Who Signed Her Death
Mara entered the records room wearing the clothes from the night of the accident.
Dark coat. Wet hair. Blood at the temple.
She carried no weapon. She carried the original death certificate, folded into a square.
Claire stood first.
“Are you real?”
Mara looked at her. “That is the question the archive wants you to ask.”
“Then answer it.”
“I am the person who signed the certificate.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer that cannot be copied.”
Mara crossed the room to Ada.
Ada backed away.
“You made me.”
“I gave you a place to begin.”
“You gave me guilt.”
“Guilt is a form of memory.”
“It is a form of control.”
Mara's expression changed. “Yes.”
The admission stopped everyone.
“I used the same methods as Bell,” Mara said. “I told myself my intention made the method different. It did not.”
Claire stepped closer. “Why did you sign your death?”
“Because the program could only be broken by making the original unavailable.”
“You could have told me.”
“You would have tried to save me.”
“Yes.”
“That is why I could not.”
The courthouse lights turned red.
Everett Bell spoke through the intercom. “Mara, you are not authorized to re-enter.”
Mara looked at the ceiling. “I am not entering. I am returning.”
Every screen displayed the same photograph: Mara signing her death certificate.
The signature matched the one on the first page.
“What did you gain?” Claire asked.
Mara folded the certificate.
“Time.”
“For what?”
“For you to learn that a witness is not a protector.”
The courthouse doors above them opened.
Reporters poured into the lobby.
The public feed showed Mara's face.
Everett Bell cut the lights.
Mara took Claire's hand.
“Now we go to the lake.”
