Chapter 55
The Chair That Remembered
The restraint closed over Claire's wrists.
Mara reached her first, but the chair rejected her hand. A red light scanned the room. The death certificate on the platform continued to change, replacing Claire's name with a series of numbers.
“Do not fight it,” Ada said. “It records resistance.”
“Then what do I do?”
“Remember something it cannot predict.”
Claire looked at the water rushing through the tunnel. She remembered Lena's coat, the missing button, the way her sister had once lied about being cold. She remembered Mara's laugh in the kitchen. She remembered being angry without knowing why.
The chair tightened.
Mara placed the death certificate beneath Claire's palm.
“Sign the wrong name,” she said.
Claire saw the line waiting on the page.
She wrote LENA ROWAN.
The system froze.
The water stopped rising.
Mara smiled. “Good.”
“Why did that work?” Daniel asked.
“Because Lena is dead,” Ada answered. “The system has no current pattern for her.”
The restraints opened.
Claire fell forward. Mara caught her.
On the wall, a new status appeared: DEATH RECORD CONTESTED.
Above them, the tunnel groaned.
Everett Bell's voice entered through the pipes.
“You cannot hide behind a dead woman's name.”
Claire stood. “You have done exactly that for eighteen months.”
The lake surged.
The platform split in two.
