Chapter 58
The Witness Between
The glass floor broke without falling.
The corridor became a bridge suspended above black water. Rowan stood on one side. Ada stood on the other. Claire remained between them.
Mara reached for Claire's hand.
“Do not choose,” she said.
“The system wants a choice.”
“Then give it a relationship.”
Claire looked at Rowan. “You are my witness.”
She looked at Ada. “You are my witness.”
The system rejected the duplicate designation.
CONFLICT.
Claire repeated it. “Both.”
The water below rose toward the bridge.
Daniel moved beside her. “What happens if the system cannot choose?”
“It loses the record.”
“Then let it lose.”
Mara shook her head. “The people inside it lose with it.”
The bridge began to collapse.
Claire took the blue pencil and wrote across the air between Rowan and Ada.
ROWAN VALE — WITNESS.
Then she wrote:
ADA — WITNESS.
The system rejected both.
Claire added a third line.
CLAIRE ROWAN — WITNESS OF WITNESSES.
The water stopped.
Every phone in the courthouse rang.
The public feed displayed the three names.
Everett Bell screamed through the speakers.
“You cannot create legal identity with handwriting.”
Claire looked at the black water.
“You did.”
The bridge reformed beneath their feet.
At the far end, a door opened onto daylight.
Mara walked through first.
On the other side waited a crowd of reporters, attorneys, and families whose names had appeared in the archive.
The first camera focused on Claire.
The death certificate in her hand began to burn.
