Chapter 64
The First Response
The first response was a girl of three.
She stood in the daylight with a red ribbon in her hair. Her face was Claire's, but her eyes belonged to Mara.
“My name is not Claire,” she said.
Everett dropped the lantern.
“You were discontinued.”
“You forgot to ask me.”
The girl walked into the lower church. The fire vanished as she passed.
She picked up the torn ledger page.
“Mara wrote this before she knew what ownership meant.”
“You are a model,” Everett said.
“You are a man.”
“I am the owner of the archive.”
“That is not a person.”
The girl looked at Claire.
“You gave me your face because you thought no one would hurt you if they thought they were hurting themselves.”
Claire felt the truth move through the room.
“Did I make you?”
“You made the first choice.”
“What choice?”
“You chose not to remember Mara's first name.”
Claire stared at Everett.
He had changed his name from Everett to Owen. Mara had changed her identity in the archive. Claire had lost the first name she had ever heard her sister use.
The girl turned to Ada.
“You are the memory she could not carry.”
Ada nodded.
“And Rowan?”
“The body she refused to abandon.”
Nora closed the ledger.
Above them, the church bell rang again.
The first response placed the torn page into Claire's hand.
“Say the first name.”
Claire looked at Mara.
Mara's model stood at the edge of the firelight.
Claire remembered her sister's childhood name.
“Marisol,” she said.
Every door in the church opened.
Everett Bell fell to his knees.
The paper archive began writing without ink.
