Chapter 69
The Candlelight Record
The people outside had come from the archive.
They stood in the church with candles and paper copies. Some had traveled through the night. Some had arrived because a name on the public feed matched a person they had buried.
Nora walked into the aisle carrying the ledger.
“Read the names,” she said.
One by one, the people spoke.
A missing son. A wife with two death certificates. A daughter labeled discontinued. A man whose voice had been assigned to another body.
The church filled with names.
Claire stood at the front beside Ada, Rowan, and Mara.
Everett Bell remained below the church, visible through the open floor.
“This is not evidence,” he said.
Nora raised the ledger. “It is testimony.”
The first response held up the torn page.
“It is memory.”
Claire added, “It is a record.”
The paper archive began copying itself. Pages slid from the ledger and passed through the crowd. Each person took one. Each person read the name aloud.
The county attorney entered the church with police behind her.
“This gathering is unlawful,” she announced.
Daniel stepped into the aisle. “So was the clinic.”
The officers did not move.
The county attorney looked at Everett below the floor.
“You promised no public exposure.”
Everett looked up. “I promised control.”
“You promised protection.”
“Protection is control.”
The sentence entered every phone in the church.
The public feed returned.
Claire saw her own death certificate appear one last time.
The date had changed to today.
The cause of death now read: witness failure.
Ada took the blue pencil.
She wrote beneath it.
WITNESS CONTINUES.
The certificate dissolved.
On the wall above the altar, a final message appeared.
ROOM ONE COMPLETE. ROOM TWO OPEN.
Mara looked toward the church ceiling.
“Room Two is under Bellwether Lake.”
The candles went out together.
