Chapter 75
Room Three
Room Three was not beneath the lake.
It was inside Claire's house.
The message on Cabin 12's window appeared on every surface she owned: bathroom mirror, kitchen tile, the glass of the old answering machine. By the time she returned home, the words had faded everywhere except the spare-room wall.
Ada stood beside the paint seam. “It has always been here.”
Claire opened the panel.
Behind it was a narrow room filled with boxes from Lena's apartment.
Claire had never moved them there.
Mara lifted the first lid. Inside were photographs, keys, and a stack of unopened letters.
The top letter carried Lena's handwriting.
Claire, if Mara comes back, do not let her tell you the whole truth.
Claire looked at Mara.
“Lena knew.”
“Lena was a witness before you.”
“To what?”
Mara did not answer.
The room's ceiling light turned on.
A recording began.
Lena's voice said, “Room Three is the family room. It stores what the original subject refuses to bring home.”
Claire opened another box.
Inside was a second blue pencil.
On its side, someone had engraved a single word: HOME.
