The Witness Key
The metal disk opened the engine room.
Claire descended alone. The machinery made the floor tremble. Beneath the engine, a glass cylinder held hundreds of small objects: wedding rings, hair clips, children's drawings, prescription bottles.
“What are these?” Tess asked from the stairs.
“Anchors,” Ada said.
Each object carried a family memory. The program had collected them because physical objects were harder to argue with than a voice.
Claire found Lena's missing button in the cylinder.
The moment she touched it, the Mercy stopped.
The engine room filled with recorded voices.
“She wore the coat when she left.”
“He kept the ring after the death.”
“The child drew the lake before the transfer.”
The voices belonged to families.
Lena spoke last.
“Claire, the witness key does not open a door. It tells the room who has the right to remember.”
Claire held the button against the cylinder.
Every object lit.
The glass cracked.
Captain Bell appeared above the engine stairs.
“Give me the key.”
“You are not Everett.”
“I am continuity.”
“You are a model.”
“A model can own a ship.”
The cylinder opened.
Objects flew through the engine room.
Claire caught a photograph of Lena.
On the back, Lena had written a final instruction.
FIND THE PERSON WHO REMEMBERS THE ACCIDENT WITHOUT A FACE.
The captain stepped onto the engine platform.
Behind him, the water began to rise.
