Chapter 94
The House That Remembers
The house stood at the edge of the lake.
It had no street number. Its windows faced inland. The front door opened when Claire placed Lena's library card beneath the lock.
Inside, every room was furnished with objects from a different family.
The kitchen held Lucy's red mug. The hallway carried Rowan's school coat. The study contained Mara's blood-stained scarf.
“This is where they stored family memory,” Ada said.
“Not patients,” Claire answered.
“Not bodies.”
“Only what people used to recognize them.”
The house lights turned on room by room.
At the end of the hallway, a bedroom door opened.
Lena stood inside.
She did not wear the coat.
“You let me go,” she said.
Claire stepped closer.
“I did.”
“Then why did you come back?”
“To return the objects.”
Lena looked at the room. “The objects are not the person.”
“I know.”
“You are still carrying the coat.”
Claire looked down. The coat was around her shoulders.
She removed it and placed it on the bed.
The house shuddered.
Every door opened.
The passengers entered the rooms connected to their families. They picked up their objects, held them, and put them down again.
No one took anything home.
Lena smiled.
“Now you remember me without owning me.”
Her body faded into the bedroom light.
On the wall behind her, a final message appeared.
ROOM FIVE IS NOT A PLACE. ROOM FIVE IS THE PERSON WHO REFUSES TO FORGET.
Claire heard Everett Bell laughing from beneath the floor.
The house began to sink into the lake.
