The Notebook That Wrote Back
The notebook wrote a second sentence.
Claire watched the letters form.
YOU CHOSE TO REMEMBER WITH WITNESSES. NOW CHOOSE WHAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO KNOW.
Tess read it aloud.
“It wants consent.”
“It wants ownership,” Mara said.
Ada touched the page. “The system learned a new word and is trying to use it.”
Daniel placed Rowan's birth certificate beside the notebook.
“Then we define the word.”
Claire wrote three rules.
No memory is evidence without the person's permission.
No witness becomes an owner.
No record can erase a living answer.
The notebook accepted the rules.
Every light in the library went out.
When they returned, the notebook's pages were blank.
The archive had not been destroyed. It had become quiet.
Ruth closed the ledger.
“That is the first time it has listened.”
A man entered the library carrying a wet briefcase.
Claire recognized him from the Mercy: the captain's face without the captain's calm.
“Everett is gone,” he said.
“Who are you?” Daniel asked.
“The model that remembers what he refused.”
He placed the briefcase on the table.
Inside was a map of every remaining room.
Room Six was circled in red.
Its location was not Bellwether.
It was Claire's childhood home.
