Vows Under Glass

Ch. 12 - What the Cameras Missed

Chapter 12

What the Cameras Missed

Ada had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. In the shattered winter glasshouse, a chill permeated the air, mingling with the scent of damp earth and broken glass. People moved with purpose, clipboards in hand, their voices a low murmur of reassurances and half-truths. The official story had settled around them too quickly, like a fog that obscured the truth. Ada felt its weight every time someone skirted a direct question, their eyes flickering away.

Standing beside her, Roman was a solid presence, close enough that their bodies formed an unspoken partnership. He kept his hands at his sides, a deliberate choice that gave Ada the space to navigate the distance between them. She could sense the tension in the air, as if the world outside had come to a standstill, waiting for them to act.

"They recover hidden evidence through the setting's concrete details," Ada whispered, her voice barely rising above the cacophony of the room.

Roman nodded, his gaze locked on hers, intense and unwavering. "Then we make them show us where it leads," he replied, determination lacing his words.

They zeroed in on the details everyone else had dismissed: a time stamp on a forgotten log, a misplaced access card tucked beneath a stack of reports, and a line in a chart that didn’t match the person who had authored it. Mira had warned Ada that the truth wouldn’t come in the form of a confession. It would manifest as something someone had tried too hard to make ordinary.

As they moved through the glasshouse, the jagged remains of shattered panes crunched beneath their feet. The sun filtered through the gaps, casting fractured shadows across the floor. Each step was a reminder of the chaos that had unfolded, a stark contrast to the sterile environment everyone tried to maintain.

When the next door opened, revealing a dimly lit office, Ada understood the cost of being right. The proof they sought could save them, but it also had the potential to drag their loved ones into the same line of fire. Roman must have sensed the weight of her thoughts; his hand settled at the small of her back, warm and reassuring against the chill. The gesture was brief, a reminder of his presence, before he withdrew, allowing her to process the gravity of their situation.

"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice steady.

For the first time since the disaster began, Ada found herself at a loss for words. She looked into his eyes, seeing the control he was willing to relinquish. It was a vulnerable moment, one that cracked open the facade they had both maintained. Instead of a plan, she opted for honesty, the only choice that felt right in the moment. Without saying a word, she turned and stepped deeper into the office, urging Roman to follow.

The flickering screen on the desk caught her attention, drawing her like a moth to a flame. The footage paused on a face Ada knew too well. It was the last person she had expected to see in this context—someone who had always been part of her life but now stood at the center of this unraveling mystery.

“Is that…?” Roman's voice trailed off, disbelief etched across his features as he leaned closer to the screen. The image was grainy, but the recognition was unmistakable.

“Yes,” Ada breathed, feeling her heart race. “It’s him.”

A sense of urgency surged within her, and she moved to unfreeze the footage, desperate for more answers. As the video resumed, she could see the figure pacing, casting furtive glances around the room, as if he was aware he was being watched. The panic in her chest twisted tighter; the implications were staggering.

“Why would he be here?” Roman asked, his brow furrowed in confusion. “What does he have to do with any of this?”

“I don’t know,” Ada replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “But we need to find out.”

The screen flickered, and just as they were about to glimpse further, the image cut abruptly to static. The sound of crackling electricity pierced the air, and Ada felt the tension snap. She turned to Roman, her heart pounding. “We need to go.”

As they moved toward the door, a sudden crash echoed from the direction they had just come from. The sound ricocheted off the walls, sending a jolt of adrenaline coursing through her veins. Roman’s hand found hers, gripping tightly as they exchanged a look filled with urgency.

“Now!” he commanded, pulling her into motion.

They dashed down the corridor, each step fueled by the instinct to escape whatever danger lurked behind them. Ada’s pulse raced, the weight of the truth and the threat looming over them merging into a single, terrifying reality. The stakes had never felt higher, and she knew, deep down, that they were only beginning to uncover the depths of the conspiracy.

But as they reached the exit, the door slammed shut in front of them, sealing their fate. The echo of their racing hearts filled the air, and the darkness that loomed ahead felt suffocating.

“Something’s wrong,” Roman said, his voice low and tense. “We’re not alone.”

Ada’s breath hitched as she turned back toward the office, dread pooling in her stomach.
