Chapter 16
The Call That Changed Everything
Ada had learned a painful truth: a crisis became most dangerous when everyone believed they understood it. The shattered winter glasshouse loomed behind them, a silent witness to chaos, its once vibrant glass now fragmented like a shattered dream. People scurried about, clutching clipboards, phones, and other instruments of denial. The official narrative settled around them too quickly, suffocating the air with false certainty. Ada could feel the weight of it pressing down every time someone sidestepped a direct question, their eyes flickering with a mix of guilt and fear.
Beside her, Roman stood just close enough to create a sense of unity, a tether in the storm. He didn’t touch her at first, a deliberate choice that allowed Ada to maintain her own space and to acknowledge the unspoken tension hanging between them.
"False resolution detonates when the antagonist reveals a final leverage point," Ada murmured, her voice low but steady. The dim light from overhead flickered, casting shadows across their faces as they navigated the aftermath of the disaster.
"Then we make them show us where it leads," Roman replied, his jaw tightening. A spark of determination ignited in his eyes, and Ada felt a rush of gratitude for his unwavering resolve.
They honed in on the details everyone else had overlooked: a timestamp on a security feed, a misplaced access card, an anomaly in a chart that didn’t match the person who had authored it. Mira had warned Ada that the truth would never come as a neat confession. It would emerge as something someone had tried too hard to make ordinary, like a faulty lock on a door that should have remained closed.
When the next door swung open, Ada’s heart raced as she stepped into the room, understanding the cost of being right. The evidence they sought could save them, yet it also threatened to drag the people they loved into danger. She glanced at Roman, and the silent communication between them felt electric. He saw the internal struggle playing out across her face, the weight of the decision hanging in the air.
"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low and firm. The warmth of his hand hovered just above the small of her back, a silent invitation that sent a shiver through her.
For the first time since the disaster had begun, Ada found herself unable to formulate a plan. She looked into Roman’s eyes, recognizing the control he was offering her, a willingness to follow wherever this path led. In that moment, she made a choice—a choice to keep moving forward with him, to trust him despite the uncertainty.
They stepped deeper into the building, the sterile air tinged with the faintest hint of dampness from the shattered glass. The dim lighting cast strange shadows, and the distant murmurs of hurried voices echoed through the corridors, creating an unsettling symphony of tension. Ada’s pulse quickened as they approached a series of locked cabinets lining the wall, each one marked with a faded label that hinted at the secrets contained within.
“Can you pick the lock?” she asked, her whisper barely audible over the ambient noise.
“Give me a second,” Roman replied, kneeling in front of the first cabinet. He pulled out a small toolkit, his fingers deftly working to manipulate the lock. Ada glanced around, her instincts heightened, aware that they were far from alone in this maze of uncertainty.
“Keep watch,” he instructed, not looking up from his task, but Ada could see the concentration etched across his features.
She turned her attention to the hallway, scanning for any signs of movement. The air was thick with tension as she listened intently, half-expecting someone to burst in at any moment. Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps broke through the silence, and her heart sank.
“Roman,” she hissed, urgency threading through her voice.
He looked up, his eyes wide as he straightened. “Almost got it,” he murmured, fingers flying over the lock. Ada held her breath, willing him to be faster.
The footsteps grew louder, echoing ominously. “We can’t linger here,” she urged, glancing back at him. “What if—”
“Got it!” Roman exclaimed, the lock clicking open just as the door at the far end of the corridor swung wide.
Ada’s heart raced as she grabbed his arm, yanking him to his feet. They slipped inside the cabinet just as a figure entered the hallway, silhouetted against the harsh fluorescent lights. The figure glanced around, their face obscured, and Ada’s breath caught in her throat.
The final message awaited them from within the building, heavy with the promise of revelation—and danger.
