Chapter 7
The Room Prepared for Her
The shattered remnants of the winter glasshouse lay in disarray, jagged shards of glass reflecting the flickering overhead lights. Dark clouds loomed outside, casting a ghostly pallor over the chaos within. People swarmed like agitated bees, clipboards clutched tightly, phones pressed to ears, their voices a cacophony of misinformation and half-truths. Ada stood at the edge of it all, acutely aware of how quickly the narrative was solidifying around them, a fragile construct that would fail under scrutiny.
Beside her, Roman shifted, his presence a steady anchor in the tumult. He stood close enough that their shoulders brushed, but he kept his hands to himself—a calculated choice that spoke volumes. Ada appreciated the restraint, the way he allowed her to define the space between them. It gave her a sense of control amidst the chaos.
"They enter an antagonist-controlled space and find a prepared trap," Ada murmured, her voice barely above the din.
Roman's dark eyes narrowed, his brow creasing with concentration. "Then we make them show us where it leads."
They both knew the truth was buried beneath layers of deception, and they were the only ones willing to sift through the rubble. A timestamp on a forgotten log, an access card left on a desk, a discrepancy in a chart that didn’t match the author’s signature—each detail was a breadcrumb leading deeper into the web of lies. Mira had been right; the truth wouldn't present itself on a silver platter—it would appear as something that had been too carefully orchestrated.
When the door to the back office creaked open, Ada felt the weight of their discovery hang heavy in the air. She understood the risk of being right. The proof could save them, but it also threatened to draw their loved ones into the danger they had uncovered. Roman’s gaze flicked to hers, apprehension mingling with determination. His hand found the small of her back, a grounding warmth that sent a shiver up her spine, yet he let it linger, waiting for her to guide them.
"Tell me what you need," he urged, his voice low but edged with urgency.
For the first time since the crisis had erupted, Ada hesitated. She searched his face, the fierce protective instinct behind those dark eyes, and felt the weight of his offer. But there was no plan to share, no calculated move to execute. Just a shared understanding that the next step could lead them deeper into the shadows.
She took a breath, steadying herself. "We need to keep moving," she finally said, her voice firm. There was no time for second-guessing.
They pushed through the clutter of the glasshouse, navigating around fallen debris and scattered papers. The air was thick with tension, the scent of damp earth and shattered glass mingling with the cold. Ada's heart raced; she could almost hear it echoing against the fractured walls. Roman stayed close, their shoulders brushing again as they maneuvered through the maze of chaos.
Inside the drawer of a battered filing cabinet, they found it—a flash drive, innocuous and unassuming, yet heavy with implication. Ada’s fingers trembled slightly as she lifted it out, the truth contained within it like a coiled spring ready to unleash chaos. Her breath hitched; it was more than just evidence. It was a trap designed specifically for her.
"This was meant for me," she whispered, the realization crashing over her like a wave.
Roman’s expression hardened, a fierce protectiveness igniting in his gaze. "Then we need to figure out who set this up before they strike again."
She nodded, the weight of their shared mission settling on her shoulders. The adrenaline coursed through her veins, a heady mix of fear and resolve. "We need to find Mira. If anyone can make sense of this, it’s her."
As they turned to leave, a sudden crash echoed from the entrance, freezing them in place. Ada’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. The frantic energy of the glasshouse shifted, everyone turning toward the sound, faces a mix of fear and confusion.
Roman’s grip tightened on her arm. "Stay close."
She nodded, her pulse racing as they edged toward the door, peering through the crowd. A figure stood silhouetted against the backdrop of the storm, an ominous presence emerging from the shadows.
"Roman," Ada whispered, dread curling in her stomach.
But before she could say more, the figure stepped into the light, revealing a familiar face twisted in a cruel smile. "Looking for something?"
The world around them blurred as Ada's mind raced. The truth they had sought was no longer a distant possibility; it was here, and the danger had just become very real.
