Chapter 18
Forty-Eight Hours of Folding Chairs
Daniel refused the service lane at nine, ten, and eleven.
At eleven fifteen Lena sat him in the front row and played unedited footage from the campaign. Nora defending his restaurant workers. Nora refusing to call him cruel. Nora admitting that love could survive without shared ownership.
"She protected my reputation," Daniel said.
"Yes," Lena answered. "And you kept treating that as consent."
He signed at eleven forty-three.
The lane transferred to the cooperative permanently. Daniel's restaurant loan remained his problem, but seventy members voted to book its catering for the first reopening season at fair rates. Help became a contract instead of a debt.
The corrected plan reached city hall with four minutes left.
That night the volunteers slept among folding chairs. Nora found Theo in the projection booth watching rain strike the glass.
"You did not ask Daniel for me," she said.
"You told me not to rescue you."
"You listened."
"Eventually."
She stood close enough to feel the question between them and left it unanswered. Listening once did not erase concealment. Wanting him did not require pretending it did.
At sunrise Malcolm called. Mercer debt holders had accelerated repayment.
If the cooperative won, they could seize the Lantern through Theo's partnership guarantee before the keys changed hands.
