Chapter 11
The Price of Being Believed
Wren had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. The city felt frenetic, a flurry of activity surrounding the abandoned wedding site. People rushed by, clutching clipboards and tapping away on phones, each one contributing to the same polished narrative. The official story had settled around them too quickly, like a shroud, and Wren could sense its edges every time someone avoided a direct question or a searching gaze.
Luca stood beside Wren, his presence a steady anchor amidst the chaos. He didn’t touch her at first, the restraint both comforting and maddening. It allowed Wren the space to consider the distance, to feel the weight of their unacknowledged connection.
"The protagonist is framed or loses a key ally; the love interest must trust them publicly," Wren murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, yet heavy with urgency.
Luca turned slightly, his dark eyes narrowing with focus. "Then we make them show us where it leads," he replied, his tone low but resolute.
They moved with purpose down the dimly lit corridor, following the one detail everyone else had overlooked: a time stamp on the security footage, a misplaced access card, a line in a report that didn’t match the name of the author. June had warned Wren that the truth would not arrive as a confession; it would emerge as something someone had tried too hard to make ordinary, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
As they approached the next door, tension coiled in Wren’s stomach. She understood the cost of being right now; the proof they sought could save them, but it also threatened to drag the people they loved into the same line of fire. Luca sensed her hesitation, his hand finding the small of her back, warm through the fabric of her blouse. He held it there for a moment, steadying her before he withdrew it, allowing her to choose the distance again.
"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low, laced with concern.
Wren took a breath, the air heavy with the scent of polished wood and fresh paint. For the first time since the disaster had begun unfolding, she hesitated to answer with a plan. Instead, she looked at him, at the control he was willing to relinquish. It was a terrifying realization, one that made her heart race for all the wrong reasons. In that moment, she made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him.
They reached the door, and Wren pushed it open, the hinges creaking ominously in the silence. Inside, the stark room was empty, save for the remnants of what had once been there. A few scattered papers lay on the floor, but the evidence they sought had already been cleared away. Her heart sank as the reality hit her—every piece of proof had vanished, leaving nothing but a hollow sense of loss.
“Damn it,” Wren cursed under her breath, stepping into the room. She scanned the space, desperately searching for anything that might have been missed. “It was right here. They can’t just erase it like that.”
Luca followed her, his brow furrowing with frustration. “Someone’s covering their tracks. We need to find out who,” he said, pacing the room. “There must be something we can still work with.”
Wren turned to face him, her heart racing. “We’re running out of time, Luca. If they find out we’re digging, they might come after us next.”
He met her gaze, his expression fierce. “Then we need to be smarter. If we can’t find the evidence here, we’ll have to track down the lead that got us here in the first place.”
“Right,” Wren agreed, her mind racing. “But we need to be careful. We can’t let anyone know we’re onto them.”
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway outside, heavy and purposeful. Wren felt her pulse quicken, the thrill of danger mingling with a surge of adrenaline. She turned to Luca, her eyes wide.
“We need to hide,” she whispered urgently, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward a closet at the far end of the room.
They slipped inside just as the door swung open, revealing a figure silhouetted against the stark hallway light. Wren held her breath, heart pounding in her ears, as they pressed against the back wall of the closet.
“Where is it?” the man’s voice boomed, unmistakably authoritative. “It was here! Find it!”
Wren exchanged a panicked glance with Luca, their faces inches apart in the dim light. She could feel the heat radiating from him, the intensity of the moment electrifying the air between them.
“Stay quiet,” he mouthed, his eyes locked on hers, the unspoken bond between them growing heavier with each passing second.
As the footsteps drew closer, Wren's thoughts raced. They were on the brink of discovery, and yet, they could be caught at any moment. The stakes had never been higher.
