Ch. 21 - The Woman In Elena's Coat

Chapter 21

The Woman In Elena's Coat

Elena told the truth in sequence.

The contract. The forged proxy. The yacht log. The photo taken before she arrived. Noah's shell company. Grant's threat.

Celeste watched with a mother's wounded face.

It was excellent theater.

Then Mara entered with the original footage.

The courtroom shifted before the judge even approved it. People knew when evidence had weight. They leaned toward it.

The screen showed the yacht corridor. The woman in Elena's coat walked past the camera, head lowered.

Celeste's lawyer objected.

The judge overruled him.

The woman reached the service door. She lifted one hand to the panel. The pearl bracelet slid down her wrist.

Elena heard Celeste inhale.

Adrian did not look away from his mother.

The woman turned toward the camera.

Not fully. Just enough.

The courtroom saw Celeste Marlowe wearing Elena's coat.

The sound that moved through the room was not loud. It was worse. Recognition, multiplied.

Celeste stood. "That is manipulated."

Mara's voice carried from the aisle. "Original storage. Yacht black-box archive. Chain of custody logged before the explosion."

Grant lowered his head.

Elena saw it and understood: he had known the footage existed, but not that Mara had recovered the original.

Adrian rose slowly.

The judge told him to sit.

He did not.

"My mother attempted to have me declared incompetent," Adrian said, voice rough but steady, "using a forged proxy, a staged marriage, and the woman she intended to blame."

Celeste looked at him then.

For the first time, she looked less like a strategist than a mother who had miscalculated the child she made.

Adrian's hand found the back of Elena's chair.

He did not touch her.

He did not have to.
