Chapter 9
The Door They Left Open
Lydia left the service gate open because she wanted Mira to choose it.
The ambulance carrying Nessa's son waited beyond the drive. Tomas could override the gate for ninety seconds, but the trust server would seal the moment security registered Mira outside the estate.
"Take Nessa," Mira told him. "Dr. Shaw meets you at the county hospital."
Nessa caught Mira's sleeve. "You are not staying here for paper."
"I am staying for the mechanism that can do this again."
Elias remained beside her without announcing protection. They watched the ambulance clear the gate before turning toward the server room.
Tomas triggered the override. Every exterior door unlocked, including the west wing. Staff stepped into corridors and looked at one another as if the house had lost gravity.
Inside the server room, Elias found the uncompleted gala package. Celia had inserted Lydia's videos but removed one execution page from the trust.
"She is keeping leverage," Mira said.
"So are we."
Elias opened the archived witnessing log. His own signature appeared on Mira's guardianship. Beneath it was a remote authentication from his father, dated two days after the man's documented stroke.
"The token came from this estate," Elias said. "My father may not have known."
"Or he taught Lydia how."
An alert showed Owen's incapacity order uploaded from the same token family. The fraud was not only Hawthorne history. It had been built through Ward & Hale's trust system.
Elias copied the log, then handed Mira his firm credential.
"If I testify, the firm falls with them."
Mira inserted the credential.
"Then decide before the upload finishes."
