Ch. 132 - The False Rescue: The Copy

Chapter 132

The False Rescue: The Copy

The temporary housing site smelled of damp drywall, mingling with the faint scent of mildew. Mara stepped over a sagging threshold, her pulse quickening as the fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a harsh glow on the faces of weary families. Their eyes, hollow and sunken, spoke of sleepless nights and lingering despair. Clutching the relocation roster, the crumpled edges bit into her palm, a reminder of the truth she was about to reveal.

“Are you sure about this?” Leon’s voice sliced through the murmur of anxious conversations, his brow knitted as he leaned against the wall, arms crossed defensively. “The last thing we need is to stir the pot more than it already is.”

Mara met his gaze, resolute. “If we don’t confront this now, we’re letting them play us like pawns. This document—” she gestured to the paper, “—contradicts everything Vantage has claimed in public.”

Nia stood nearby, her hands wringing together, the tremor in her voice betraying her fear. “We need to ensure every affected resident has a voice. They have the right to know what’s happening behind the scenes.” She stepped closer, urgency in her eyes. “They can’t keep using us as leverage.”

Rowan joined them, his tone steady but urgent. “Rushing a statement could backfire. We need to tread carefully. One wrong word, and it could turn against us.” He glanced at the document, concern etched on his face.

Mara took a breath, the weight of their collective anxiety pressing on her. She placed the relocation roster into the evidence box, the lid closing with a definitive thud. “This isn’t just about us anymore. This is bigger than all of us.”

As she moved around the room, she insisted that everyone who had touched the document sign the chain of custody. A frail woman with tired eyes looked up, realization dawning. “You mean… this document was meant to make me choose?” Her voice trembled, a mix of anger and betrayal.

Mara nodded, her expression solemn. “You had a right to know the truth, to choose the truth.”

The woman’s gaze sharpened, a flicker of resolve igniting within her. “Then I’m not staying silent anymore. They can’t silence us.”

A heavy silence enveloped the group, the gravity of their situation settling around them. Leon’s shoulders relaxed slightly, a spark of determination igniting in him. “With your testimony, we can push back. We need to get this out there before the next inspection.”

Mara jotted a note in the case log, her mind racing with the potential fallout. She made a silent vow that the next person asked to carry this burden wouldn’t have to face it alone.

“Just remember,” Rowan interjected, his voice low, “we need to protect ourselves too. This plan of theirs is designed to fracture our witness network. Don’t let them pit us against each other.”

Mara felt the weight of his warning. Trust was fragile, easily shattered. “We keep our stories straight. We stand together. That’s our strength.”

As they prepared to leave, her phone buzzed in her pocket, a sharp reminder of the world outside. She pulled it out, frowning at the unknown number flashing back at her. With a quick motion, she answered.

“Mara.” The voice on the other end was familiar yet disquieting. “I have an address for you. But you need to listen carefully…”

The urgency in the caller's tone sent a chill through her. “What’s this about?”

“You need to get there before it’s too late. No time for questions. Just trust me.”

The call ended abruptly, leaving Mara with a knot in her stomach. She looked at her team, their faces reflecting uncertainty and resolve. “We have to move. Now.”

Leon nodded, determination set in his jaw, while Nia’s eyes sparkled with resolve. They stepped into the dim hallway, the world outside brimming with secrets and shadows. The address lingered in Mara’s mind like a haunting melody, each step forward pulling them deeper into the unfolding mystery. Whatever awaited them, she knew they were on the brink of a revelation that could change everything.
