The Man She Did Not Run Away With
Sam refused the role of alternative husband before Celia offered it.
He repaired the Marlowe screen with patient hands and said, "I am not proof you chose wrong. I was twenty-six and unbearable."
"You were less organised about it."
"That is not the same as better."
Relief arrived with disappointment. Celia wanted neither an affair nor rescue, but part of her had preserved Sam as a door she might have opened.
Behind the screen he found a programme from 1989 bearing her mother's name: Marianne Ward, costume assistant. Celia had believed her mother spent that month in hospital.
Sam remembered her painting scenery at midnight, laughing with a brush between her teeth.
"She asked me not to tell you," he said. "She said you needed one adult who looked certain."
The sketches in the wall were not evidence of illness. They were evidence of a secret creative life.
"Did she perform?"
"There was a film night. Someone recorded it."
The reel had disappeared when the cinema closed.
