It Was All a Misunderstanding
Claire Bennett's test results came back quickly.
Because the wooden board had cushioned her, her fall wasn't too serious.
She had multiple soft-tissue abrasions, and her arm had suffered a muscle tear from being wrenched when she fell at the end. All in all, it was a blessing in disguise.
Claire Bennett was wheeled back into the hospital room, and the doctor needed to explain the patient's condition to her family.
In the hallway, Julian Sterling stood there tall and straight. He had taken off his suit jacket and was wearing a white dress shirt with the top two buttons undone, revealing his finely shaped collarbones. Broad shoulders, narrow waist—he drew plenty of looks from people passing by.
The doctor couldn't help thinking to herself: What a handsome man. No wonder that female patient wanted to fake a pregnancy and use a child to tie him down. But what a pity—sooner or later, the truth was bound to come out.
During the examination just now, the hospital had found that Claire Bennett was not pregnant.
Normally this was private patient information, and the doctor had no right to interfere. But it affected the patient's follow-up treatment—pregnant and not pregnant required different medications—so she had to tell the family the truth.
"Mr. Sterling, regarding the patient's condition..."
The doctor told Julian Sterling Claire Bennett's basic condition. Then after hesitating for a moment, she said, "Also, I'm sorry to tell you that Ms. Bennett isn't pregnant. Is there some misunderstanding between you?"
At that, Julian Sterling's expression darkened.
Claire Bennett wasn't pregnant?
He had never expected that. Originally, her pregnancy had been a problem; now that she wasn't pregnant, it should have been a good thing. But somehow he couldn't feel happy about it. Instead, he even felt like Claire Bennett had deceived him.
"Got it."
Julian Sterling took the examination report and entered the hospital room.
After some basic treatment, Claire Bennett's hand had been wrapped in thick gauze, and she already looked much better.
But her body still hurt badly, and she frowned, her expression pained.
Julian Sterling walked over and sat beside the hospital bed. Claire Bennett remembered that this man had brought her to the hospital, and filled with gratitude, she quickly thanked him. "Thank you for helping me."
"Do you like Ethan Sterling that much?" he suddenly asked.
Claire Bennett looked at him in confusion, not understanding why he would suddenly ask that.
She answered instinctively, "I used to like him..."
Ethan Sterling was the man she had met outside when she was fighting with the Bennett family. When he was pursuing her, he had been gentle and considerate, showering her with attention, which had made her feel deeply warmed at the time, and that was why she had agreed to be with him.
She had once thought Ethan Sterling was a man she could entrust her whole life to.
Thinking of the scene she had seen of Naomi Pierce together with Ethan Sterling, that trace of warmth in Claire Bennett's eyes vanished like smoke. She lifted her gaze to Julian Sterling and said firmly, "I don't like him anymore."
Don't like him anymore...
Julian Sterling's irritated mood unexpectedly began to ease after hearing Claire Bennett say that she no longer liked Ethan Sterling.
His tightly furrowed brows relaxed, and with a cold face he said, "Liar. If you don't like him, then why did you pretend to be pregnant and go make a scene with him? Wasn't it because you wanted him to take responsibility?"
Claire Bennett was dumbfounded.
Wait, was there some misunderstanding between her and Julian Sterling?
She sat up excitedly, but accidentally pulled at the many wounds on her body. The pain made her bare her teeth and tears burst out wildly. "It hurts so bad..."
Julian Sterling stepped forward and helped her lie back down. "Why are you moving around like that?"
Claire Bennett grabbed Julian Sterling's hand and said excitedly, "I wanted to ask that just now—when was I ever pregnant? And I never went to make Ethan Sterling take responsibility either!"
Julian Sterling patiently said in a deep voice, "The day before yesterday, you were pulling and tugging with Ethan Sterling downstairs at the Sterling International building. People said you went to settle accounts with Ethan Sterling while sticking out your belly, and you made a huge scene too."
"..." Claire Bennett nearly coughed up a mouthful of blood!
She had only gone to watch the drama, and somehow she had been misunderstood. She was seriously being wronged here!
Claire Bennett was so miserable she felt like crying, and quickly explained, "You've got it wrong. The woman who went to see Ethan Sterling that day was someone else. I was only going to watch the excitement. I wasn't pregnant, and I didn't go settle accounts with him either!"
