Chapter 376
Grandma Shaw Was Hospitalized
"Where's Manqing?" Grandma Shaw suddenly asked about Claire Bennett's mother again.
Mrs. Shaw said helplessly, "She's been busy lately. How about she comes to see you when she has time?"
Grandma Shaw stared blankly at Mrs. Shaw, moisture welling in her eyes, and murmured, "Why isn't Manqing coming to see me? She hasn't come in so long..."
Hearing Grandma Shaw's words, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw both grew grave.
Ever since Megan Shaw Bennett's car accident, she hadn't come to see Grandma Shaw for over ten years. But Grandma Shaw had Alzheimer's and often forgot many things, so when they brushed it off casually, she usually didn't press further.
But whenever she remembered Megan Shaw Bennett, she would keep calling out like this, insisting on seeing her.
This time, she wanted to see Claire Bennett.
Since Megan Shaw Bennett couldn't come, bringing Claire Bennett over would work too.
Mrs. Shaw immediately shot Sean Shaw a look, signaling him to hurry and ask where Claire Bennett had gotten to.
Catching Mrs. Shaw's look, Sean Shaw immediately nodded and stepped out of the hospital room with his phone in hand.
Grandma Shaw didn't know what had occurred to her, but she choked out through sobs, "Manqing, she brought Claire to see me! Claire... Grandma will take you to buy candy, okay? Grandma remembers you loved candy most. Your mom wouldn't let you eat it, so Grandma would secretly buy it for you!"
Claire Bennett ran into Sean Shaw at the doorway of the hospital room.
Before she even had time to say anything, she heard Grandma Shaw's words, and her memories rushed back to the past. Her eyes instantly stung.
Claire Bennett hurried into the hospital room. "Grandma, I'm here!"
When Grandma Shaw heard Claire Bennett's voice, she lifted her aged eyes to look at her. After studying her carefully for a while, Grandma Shaw finally said in a trembling voice, "Manqing! My daughter, you finally came to see me!"
Claire Bennett froze for a moment, but still couldn't hold back her tears. She had never expected Grandma to mistake her for her mother.
She actually did look very much like her mother around the eyes and brows when her mother was younger. It was only because her mother had lain in a hospital bed for too long now, losing the lively beauty she once had, that she had changed and no longer resembled her as much.
When she saw Grandma Shaw shakily trying to get out of bed, Claire Bennett quickly snapped back to herself and went forward to support her.
Claire Bennett softly explained to Grandma Shaw, "Grandma, you've mistaken me for someone else. I'm not Mom, I'm Claire. Do you remember me?"
She knew Grandma Shaw had memory loss. In the past, she had often gone to visit her too.
But every time, Grandma Shaw would forget her existence after seeing her, and the next time they met, it was as if she were seeing her for the first time. In her grandmother's memory, she was still a little child.
Claire Bennett felt very helpless about that too.
And now Grandma Shaw had mistaken her again.
"Manqing, you're already this grown up and still so naughty, actually joking around with me." Grandma Shaw didn't take in Claire Bennett's words at all and still directly treated her as Megan Shaw Bennett, looking at her with a face full of delight.
Seeing this, a helpless expression appeared on Claire Bennett's face.
In the end, she gave in and stopped explaining. After all, her mother was lying in the hospital now. If Grandma really understood, then once she started demanding to see her mother, it would become even more troublesome.
"I really was joking. I didn't expect you not to be fooled," Claire Bennett said, going along with Grandma Shaw's words.
After hearing that, Grandma Shaw gave a smug little snort. "Of course! I'm so smart. How could I possibly forget what my own daughter looks like?"
Claire Bennett curled her lips into a smile. "How are you feeling?"
At that moment, Grandma Shaw's expectant gaze kept searching behind Claire Bennett, as though she were looking for someone.
She reached out and grabbed Claire Bennett's hand, asking eagerly, "Did you bring Claire with you? I want to take Claire out to play. Call Claire over for me."
Hearing Grandma Shaw say that, Claire Bennett's eyes stung even more fiercely.
Back when her mother brought her back to her maternal family's home, her grandmother would secretly take her to buy candy, because her mother wouldn't allow her to eat it. That was one of the best memories of her childhood.
She never expected that now, even though Grandma no longer remembered her, she still remembered that she liked candy.
Claire Bennett forcefully held back the surging tears and said softly, "She didn't come today."
Just then, a slight noise came from the doorway. Julian Sterling, who had gone to park the car earlier, had arrived.
Parking at the hospital was fairly difficult, and Claire Bennett had been anxious to see her grandmother, so she had come up to the hospital room first while Julian Sterling parked the car and came afterward.
When Grandma Shaw saw Julian Sterling, her eyes lit up with a few bright glimmers.
She said in surprise, "Old Fourth Sterling! Did you come with Manqing to see me today too?"
Those words made several people in the hospital room change expression at the same time.
When Mr. and Mrs. Shaw saw Julian Sterling, they had both first been stunned. Before they even had time to react, they heard Grandma Shaw's words.
At once, the two of them looked even more indescribable. They exchanged a glance, and emotions only the other could understand flashed in their eyes.
Julian Sterling stood in the doorway. After hearing Grandma Shaw's words, he frowned slightly.
The name Old Fourth Sterling sounded somewhat familiar. He seemed to have heard it somewhere before.
Could it be that Claire Bennett's grandmother had mistaken him for someone else?
