Chapter 389
The Taste He Could Never Forget
Hearing the old Mrs. Sterling praise her, Claire Bennett smiled a little shyly.
"Mm, I made all of it. Grandpa, Grandma, hurry and try it to see if it suits your taste."
Old Mrs. Sterling picked up a piece of braised pork and put it in her mouth.
After she swallowed it, her eyes instantly lit up, and she praised it over and over. "Oh my! This braised pork is really delicious. The meat is rich without being greasy, and firm without being tough."
When old Mr. Sterling heard her say that and looked at the plate of braised pork in front of him, he couldn't help swallowing.
His favorite thing to eat was braised pork, but unfortunately, after the Sterling family changed cooks recently, the braised pork had been awful. The last time, it had actually made him throw up. After that, he forbade the cook from making braised pork again, and he hadn't had it in a long time.
Now a plate of braised pork with perfect color, aroma, and taste was sitting in front of him, luring out the craving in his stomach.
Old Mrs. Sterling knew old Mr. Sterling couldn't bring himself to save face, and she didn't bother arguing with him. She directly picked up a piece of braised pork and put it in his bowl, saying, "Alright, whatever it is can wait until after dinner. Hurry and try it. This braised pork is delicious."
Old Mr. Sterling still couldn't resist. He picked up the braised pork and put it in his mouth.
The moment the braised pork melted in his mouth, old Mr. Sterling's tightly furrowed brows relaxed, and he was completely amazed.
This was the taste he had searched for so long, the taste he had never been able to forget!
Julian Sterling came back with the rice served. He set the bowls in front of old Mr. Sterling and old Mrs. Sterling and said, "Grandpa, Grandma, eat."
Now old Mr. Sterling no longer found fault with everything. He bent his head and ate heartily, and with an excellent appetite at that, eating as much as two full bowls of rice!
In the end, he was so stuffed he couldn't stand it, so he went to the garden for a walk.
After dinner, Auntie Ann took the initiative to wash the dishes. After all, the master had just had her sit at the table and eat with them, so she ought to perform well.
Claire Bennett, old Mrs. Sterling, and Julian Sterling were then all dragged out by old Mr. Sterling for a walk together.
Old Mrs. Sterling held Claire Bennett's hand, her face glowing with a warm smile, and said softly, "Claire, his grandpa is just the type who says whatever is on his mind. Don't pay him any attention."
"No, it's fine. I think Grandpa is pretty interesting."
Before, Claire Bennett had been a little afraid of old Mr. Sterling, but after watching all his behavior today, she suddenly found him very amusing. Really, he was just a stubborn old man. Once she thought of him that way, he didn't seem scary anymore.
She believed Grandpa Sterling would change his opinion of her.
She would also work hard to prove herself, to prove that she was no worse than Hazel Lewis!
In the garden, old Mr. Sterling walked slowly with a stern expression. Julian Sterling was at his side supporting him, silently keeping him company.
After the two of them were silent for a while, old Mr. Sterling suddenly said, "Do you remember what I said just now?"
"I remember."
Julian Sterling's eyes flickered slightly, and he said unhurriedly, "If Claire Bennett beats Hazel Lewis, you'll accept her."
"..." Hearing that, old Mr. Sterling nearly died of anger.
He glared viciously at Julian Sterling. How could this damned brat remember only that? What he had clearly said was that if Hazel Lewis won, Julian Sterling would obediently go on a blind date with Hazel Lewis!
"I know you're stubborn. When that woman loses, our Sterling family won't treat her badly. If she wants a house or whatever else, I can give it to her. And stop talking back to me. Every decision the Sterling family makes must be the right one. Only then can we ensure our family prospers for generations!"
Julian Sterling, however, did not take old Mr. Sterling's words to heart.
He had confidence in Claire Bennett and felt that she would definitely win. Even if she lost, he would think of another way then.
When Julian Sterling returned to the house, old Mrs. Sterling was chatting with Claire Bennett. No one knew what the two were talking about, but they looked extremely cheerful.
As he watched old Mrs. Sterling laughing wholeheartedly, a trace of wistfulness flashed through his eyes.
How long had it been since he had seen Grandma this happy?
It seemed Grandma truly liked Claire.
He stepped forward and said to Claire Bennett, "Let's go. We're heading back."
After getting into the car, Claire Bennett waved goodbye to old Mrs. Sterling. "Grandpa, Grandma, goodbye."
The car gradually drove out of the village and disappeared into the night.
Claire Bennett was no longer as nervous as she had been on the way there. Instead, a faint smile rested on her lips, and she was clearly in quite a good mood.
Julian Sterling glanced at her and asked, "Were you put in a difficult position today? You were clearly here as a guest, and they still had you, the guest, do the cooking."
Claire Bennett waved her hand carelessly and smiled. "Oh, it's nothing. Grandpa and Grandma like the food I make, and that makes me very happy. Besides, now that I've married you, how am I still a guest? I should be family."
Julian Sterling froze for a moment, then curved his lips into a smile.
Seeing that Claire Bennett did not look unhappy in the slightest, he also let out a sigh of relief. "When are you planning to go back?"
