Chapter 409

Why Was He So Angry

Willow Lane had been too distracted to focus on work all day. Quite a few coworkers joked around with her, but she seemed absentminded.

Her mind was full of waiting for Hazel Lewis's next plan. At this point, Hazel Lewis was the only one who could save her.

At long last, it was time to get off work, and Hazel Lewis went with Willow Lane to a private room in a nearby Western restaurant.

The moment they sat down, Willow Lane impatiently said, "Hazel, last time you told me to spread the word that Claire Bennett works at Bennett Group, and I already did it, but what does that have to do with my situation?"

Her face was full of anxiety as she said in a panic, "The day after tomorrow is the weekend. If everyone finds out then that what I said before about being President Sterling's girlfriend was all a misunderstanding, they'll definitely laugh at me. I won't have any face left to stay at Nia anymore."

Hazel Lewis soothed her gently. "Willow, don't be anxious yet. You're one of my people now, so of course I'll find a way to help you."

Only after Hazel Lewis comforted her did Willow Lane gradually calm down.

"Didn't you tell me before that when Claire Bennett worked at Bennett Group, she had an affair with a married manager there?"

"Yeah, but later that manager came out himself and said it was all a misunderstanding." Willow Lane recalled the past and said, "I later looked into it secretly and found out that back then he had his eye on Claire Bennett's looks and wanted to make her submit to him, but Claire Bennett refused. That's why he deliberately spread that rumor, trying to force her to give in. Then the matter died down."

Who would have thought Claire Bennett had already been a vixen who seduced men since way back then.

The smile on Hazel Lewis's lips gradually turned cold. She looked at Willow Lane and said, "The people at Bennett Group know it was a misunderstanding, but in Chicago, who knows whether it really was or not?"

"But that man already came out and apologized, so how could it not be..." Willow Lane stopped halfway through her sentence.

She realized what Hazel Lewis wanted to do!

So that was it!

"You can use this to divert attention. When the time comes, who will still be paying attention to what happened between you and President Sterling?"

The cloud of worry on Willow Lane's face vanished at once, and she immediately smiled.

...

Inside the hospital room.

It was almost mealtime, and Wes Mercer was craning his neck, waiting for the delivery guy to bring his food.

He had arranged with Sienna Shaw for her to make a little extra food for him, and unexpectedly, ever since then, he'd had something to look forward to. He had already eaten Sienna Shaw's cooking for a day, and every meal had been incredibly delicious, with no repeats.

Now he didn't even find being hospitalized for recovery hard to endure anymore. He even wanted to stay longer so he could eat a few more meals cooked by Sienna Shaw.

Hugh Shaw in the neighboring hospital bed glanced at Wes Mercer and asked curiously, "Hey, Wes Mercer, was the woman who brought you food that day your girlfriend?"

Wes Mercer came back to himself and shook his head. "No, just..."

He thought about it. Calling what he and Sienna Shaw had friendship didn't really fit either, so he said, "We're coworkers."

"Who would've thought a coworker would be nice enough to bring you food too." As Hugh Shaw spoke, a shrewd gleam flashed in his eyes, and he said, "Since there's nothing going on between you two..."

Hugh Shaw curled his lips into a leering smile. "Then give me her contact info. I think she's pretty hot."

Wes Mercer's face instantly darkened with anger, and he gritted out, "Get lost!"

Over the past few days, he'd been watching different women come to visit Hugh Shaw and knew his private life was filthy. He hadn't expected him to reach over here now. A good girl like Sienna Shaw—there was no way he would let Hugh Shaw defile her.

After thinking that, Wes Mercer suddenly felt a little startled.

Why was he so angry?

Hugh Shaw had only asked him one question, yet it felt as if something of his was being snatched away.

"Wes Mercer! I'm back! I heard you got into a car accident, kid. How are you doing?" A familiar voice rang out from the doorway of the hospital room, drawing both Wes Mercer's and Hugh Shaw's attention.

Marcus Reed was standing in the doorway, peering into the room.

He had gone back to his hometown for a trip, and now he had finally returned to continue his work after Wes Mercer had gotten into a car accident.

When Wes Mercer saw Marcus Reed, he almost wanted to cry. He sighed and said, "You little punk, you're finally back. Now I don't have to work so hard anymore!"

Marcus Reed walked in and patted Wes Mercer on the shoulder comfortingly. "All right, I know you've had it rough. You don't have to suffer anymore. Let me save you."

The two of them joked around and chatted for a while.

Marcus Reed glanced at his watch and, looking considerate, said, "It's almost mealtime. I know you were in a car accident, so you probably can't eat anything good. I came to see you at this exact time on purpose. In a bit, I'll order delivery from Crown Taste House and let you really enjoy yourself."

Hearing that, Wes Mercer quickly shook his head and said, "No need. I have food."

Huh?

Marcus Reed looked at Wes Mercer in surprise.

Usually, he was always longing to eat food from Crown Taste House, but it was too expensive for him to bear. Now he was actually turning down his offer to treat him. The sun must be rising in the west.

Just then, the delivery guy finally arrived.

Wes Mercer sat bolt upright, then took the food from the delivery guy's hands. "Thanks."

After that, he returned to the hospital bed and opened up his food containers, carefully taking out each dish.

Watching Wes Mercer act as though he were about to eat some incomparable delicacy from heaven and earth, Marcus Reed couldn't help getting even more curious. He leaned in closer. "What restaurant did you order this from?"

The moment Wes Mercer saw Marcus Reed come over, he was afraid Marcus Reed would steal his food, so he immediately hugged all the dishes to his chest like he was protecting his meal.
