Amara
The foundation’s succession guide reached Everland before it reached the Sterling board.
Nakamura sent Amara a message saying the local team had translated the section on leaving into Japanese. He asked whether the foundation wanted to approve the translation.
Amara answered that the foundation could review accuracy, but not ownership of the local wording.
Nakamura replied with a single character that meant understood.
The guide was used in a workshop for family businesses whose children had moved away from the cities where their parents had built them. The participants argued about duty, then about money, then about the fear that a business would disappear if no child carried it forward.
A woman in the back asked whether a family could preserve a company without preserving its hierarchy.
Amara answered, “Only if you are willing to separate the work from the person who used to control it.”
After the workshop, Nakamura told her Everland had begun writing its own succession rules.
“Will Sterling approve them?” she asked.
“No,” he said. “That is why they may be useful.”
Amara smiled at the message.
At home, she showed Adrian the translation. He read it without asking to edit it.
“You are improving,” she said.
“I am trying to be less impressive.”
“That is a difficult ambition for you.”
He agreed.
Mira placed a toy bus on the table and announced that it was leaving. Adrian asked where it was going. Mira shook her head and pushed the bus toward the edge.
Amara watched the toy disappear onto the floor.
Some departures did not need a destination to be valid.
