The old marriage clause was scheduled for permanent archival transfer.
The museum wanted the original. The company wanted a certified copy. Elise wanted the right to veto any future reproduction that removed the context.
Adrian asked the museum to put the condition in the transfer agreement.
The curator agreed. The document could be reproduced for research, but no copy could be sold, displayed, or licensed without the contextual statement and the public review process.
The contract would no longer be a private object in a family archive. It would belong to a public institution with obligations greater than any one family’s reputation.
Amara attended the signing. She sat beside Elise, not Adrian.
He noticed and felt no urge to rearrange the chairs.
After the signatures, the curator asked whether he wanted a private copy for the house.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“We have enough evidence of what happened.”
Outside, Elise asked whether he regretted giving up the original.
“I regret that we ever treated it as ours to control.”
She accepted the answer without offering forgiveness.
That evening, Adrian told Mira that a paper had left their home.
“Paper gone,” she said.
“Yes.”
She pointed to the bookshelf.
“Book stay.”
“The books stay.”
Amara looked at him across the room. The child had drawn the boundary more clearly than any lawyer could.
Some things were carried forward because they gave life room to grow. Other things were released because they had mistaken possession for love.
