Amara
The foundation’s final report under Amara’s project did not include a conclusion about families.
It included questions.
Who gets to leave? Who pays when someone refuses? Which histories deserve privacy? What does repair look like when the person who caused harm never agrees that harm occurred?
The board asked her to add a hopeful paragraph.
She refused.
“Hope is not a conclusion we can certify.”
Instead, the report ended with a blank page titled What We Have Not Learned Yet.
The page filled quickly after publication. Readers sent questions, corrections, and accounts that contradicted the report’s assumptions.
Amara’s director asked whether she felt defeated.
“No. I feel employed.”
The answer made them laugh.
At home, Adrian had framed Mira’s purple wall drawing. It hung beside the succession guide and the community-center schedule.
“You framed the wall?” Amara asked.
“A square of it.”
“You have become sentimental.”
“I have become selective.”
Mira walked between them, carrying a marker. She added one short line to a sheet of paper and held it up.
The adults could not read it.
Amara asked whether Mira wanted them to keep it.
Mira nodded.
They put it on the refrigerator.
The family had learned to preserve what its youngest member chose to share and leave the rest alone.
