Ch. 192 - Adrian

Chapter 192

Adrian

Adrian’s last advisory report was rejected by the board.

He had proposed a modest investment in a new labor clinic. Priya and the audit committee found the proposal sound but asked him to submit it through the same competitive process as every other applicant.

He wanted to argue that he had already surrendered enough.

Instead, he thanked them and submitted the application without his name.

The clinic received funding from a mixed pool. Adrian learned the result from the published list.

The victory felt almost anonymous.

Amara asked what he would do when the advisory year ended.

“I do not know.”

“That is not a problem.”

“I know. It is simply unfamiliar.”

They walked to the community center with Mira between them. The center had added a small room for children whose parents were meeting with legal advisers. On the wall, someone had painted a yellow door.

Mira ran toward it and stopped before touching the handle.

Adrian waited for her to decide.

She opened it.

The room was empty except for cushions and a shelf of picture books.

“A room without a demand,” Amara said.

Adrian looked at the door.

He had spent years building rooms that required people to enter as someone else. The best thing he could do now was help keep a few doors open for people who had not yet chosen their shape.

Mira picked a book and sat on the floor.

The adults sat beside her, not in front of her.
