Adrian’s advisory term ended on a rainy Friday.
Priya sent the termination notice through the board secretary. It thanked him for his service and confirmed that he would retain no automatic access after midnight.
He read it alone, then signed the acknowledgment.
At midnight, his company account closed. The screen showed a simple message: Access expired.
He expected grief. What arrived was a quiet sense of being returned to himself.
Amara found him in the study.
“Are you all right?”
“I am no longer useful to Sterling.”
“That was never the same as being valuable.”
He looked at her. “I know that now.”
They turned off the study light and left the room.
The next morning, Adrian began working on a small project with Felix: a plain-language handbook for people leaving family businesses. He had no title, no office, and no authority over the finished text.
Felix gave him one assignment: remove every sentence that sounded like a speech.
Adrian failed repeatedly.
