Visitors asked what had changed since the contract first went behind glass.
Elise answered first.
“The paper became less important than the people who refused to let it speak for them.”
Adrian said, “The company became less important than the people who could leave it.”
Amara said, “The marriage became less important than the choices inside it.”
No one called the answer romantic.
After the discussion, the curator gave them a copy of the exhibit’s final review. It recorded disagreement, corrections, and the decision to keep the contract available for study without turning it into a celebration.
Elise signed the visitor book with no request for an apology.
Amara signed beneath her name: No one in this room owes the document a future.
Outside, rain had stopped. Adrian offered his coat. Amara accepted it, then returned it when the sun came out.
They walked home with no audience and no display case between them.
